Early Access 5 (EA5)

I feel like now, the team need to be focus on the implémentation of the rules and the rucks more than anything. It’s what taking this game from being properly playable.

Hello Big Aunty !!!

  • since this EA5, french commentators talk about my players as if they were all females. Women’s team clearly on the way i guess
  • I play with the “behind camera view” set on fixed, not supposed to switch. It still does on some plays, like oppposition scrums, very frustrating
  • on kick-off or kick chases, i don’t see the player i’m controlling as he is off screen. I would love the camera to be wider on kick offs, or at least have an icon on the bottom on the screen to see where the player i’m controlling is
  • seen some new fend off animations looking nice, still not done i guess but it’s getting there
  • passing feels a bit better, even though when you have several support runners close, the quick tap pass still feels random and doesnt pass to the closest as intended. Holding the pass trigger and tapping the right button to pass to a specific runner is too hard as there isn’t usually not enough time. This mechanic works great on rucks, but in the open field i find it impossible to use because the buttons popping up are random, like the furthest button doesnt necesseraliy pass to the furthest player. Or my top button doesnt necesseraliy pass to the player closest to the line.
  • I am really not a fan of the running stamina thing. I realised that the game plays better by not ever sprinting, but only sprinting when having broken the line. Then you have enough stamina to make a descent run before gasing out. I’ve played rugby a lot in real life, and to me i feel a player running to the ball should always be sprinting on reception, unless you know you’re going to pass or pivot pass. I feel like the ball carrier should always be aiming for full speed, so always holding the sprint button in offense, except when you have broken the line and want to slow down to wait for support. So i wish the stamina thing wouldnt penalise so much the endurance of a ball carrier as it does now.
  • rucks, mauls, and line outs still need lot of work
  • defense is so boring
  • tackle animation often make no sense, like when an almost beat defender is able to make a big hit on a fast runner. Doesnt do the runners speed and force justice, doesnt reflect the angle of impact
  • rucks are such a big concern, i wish you would communicate on those and clearly say when you are planning to rework those, on which big update
  • in the graphics menu, maybe you could put up some default settings with low mid high and highest settings, which we could edit by changing some options. Because i’ve tried so many settings i dont know how to reset those now…

The game sure feels improved, but still not enjoyable to be fair. I’ve had a lot of crashes in game, but they really didnt bother me because i was just bored playing so i really didnt mind quitting before half time.

Cheers !!!

I agree

Would like to see more close games and more score variances when the game officially drops

Hi BA,

Really enjoying EA 5. Another great step forward.

A couple of bugs I’ve noticed. Might have also been present during EA 4.

It looks like the statistic isn’t clearing after the first score. Subsequent scores (might just be tries, not attempted with a drop goal) look to show the name of the initial scorer. Statistic itself looks to be accurate though, just the name (header?) that’s not changing.

Additionally, it looks like bonus points aren’t being counted during the regular season of the premiership. Not sure if this happening in other leagues. But worth representing accurately for league standings etc.

Also might be worth noting that I’m getting caught out with 50:22’s a lot by the AI. Seems my players aren’t always covering the backfierld as I would expect. I suppose this will be implemented at a later date when I can customise field position, set-moves, game-plan, etc.?

Additionally, the scrum half can sometimes take a while to get to the back of the ruck. Means I’m getting “use-it” warnings from the Ref when I’ve only just got to the ball. Could be an issue if this is enforeced more strictly later on.

Also noticed then when I select an option in draft behind the ruck (e.g. long-pressing to throw to another player, it seems to have decided I can’t box-kick instead. Even if I let go without selecting a player.)

One last thing, it seems my AI players aren’t always great at positioning themselves to catch receive from a kick-off. A couple of times they’ll just wait nearby, the ball will bounce, and occasionally regathere dby the opposition. Seems to be happening to often (on medium difficulty) for this to be intentional.

Thanks!
Indie P

Few thoughts.

  • The new grass is strange to me. It makes it look like players are playing in an untrimmed garden. The end result is pitches look fuzzy.

  • Has the running animation been tweaked ? It looks very stiff at the moment and makes everyone incredibly slow.

  • The game at the moment is far too easy.

  • Because the game is so easy and rucks aren’t a real contest you have no reason to kick.

  • Targeted passing is not appearing as quickly as it used to at the Rucks. It’s making rucks feel slower.

I feel like the last update played better. I hope we can get some tweaks asap.

One of the most frustrating things is it feels like the AI took a step back and at the current update I can’t see how you could possibly lose to them.

Another important thing. Can we please get a closer camera view. The behind camera is good as a view option but just too far. We need another option for closer and behind. It will make the game and players look more presentable and have a more closer feel to what is going on and the tackles , running. It will add some more excitement.

Thanks team

It would be nice, depending on where on the field you are, is how the defence and offence works.

In the opposition 22 - you have the ball, You can select for phase play. Getting the forwards to hit it up until the bash over the line. The Defence would be very tight around the ruck, both teams on the offside lines, and bashing over to score. This also opens up space for a cross kick if all the players are bunched at the ruck.

Defence your own 22 - It is the same thing but reversed as you are the one defending. You have to watch the winger on the other end of the field, and have to get men around the rucks to tackle those forwards.

In your own 50m - It would be a passing game, but slightly safer than in their own half. Keeping players slightly less wide and deep to not lose the ball at the ruck.

In their 50m - Wide and deep lines, able to pass wide and make gaps, everyone in the line, multiple different angles and lines being run and complete running free play.

Something like this would be nice. It’s tough when you get onto their 5 metre line and you cant rumble it over, you have to pass it. It’s more realistic to todays rugby where your forwards are around that ruck bashing each other over to get a hand over the white line. Anything like this would be awesome.

I remember that in RLL4 there are 5 “end to end” cameras. Most probably all of them will be in the final version of the game as well.

Minor Points. As a qualified ref, we normally wear two watches. One on constant time from kick-off, the other for game pauses. A variety of different refs in the final version would be ideal, same for linesman etc.

Speaking of camera, the side view is on the opposite direction in all stadiums.

Eventually, it would be nice to be able to charge down kicks. If you run at the right moment and press the tackle button close enough to the kicker they will stick their arms out and might get a charge down.

Hi Guys,

Think what you’re doing is great, I haven’t been able to play the game myself but am keeping an eye on the progress through videos and think you’re really on the right track. The support lines in particular is something no rugby has ever gotten right so that’s great to see.

I can’t comment too much technically but from what I’ve seen I would just say if you want it to feel like a real rugby match you need to find a way to ramp up the penalties. From what I’ve seen rugby 25 games usually consist of relentless phases going nowhere in attack and defence which is rarely what happens in a rugby match and usually just ends up with games basically being decided by tries alone.

More penalties will then obviously give players more opportunities to kick for territory and not need to just relentlessly go side to side in attack until you break the door down.

Maybe this could be a system of how hard you go into rucks, in a risk/reward kind of way which I think is what the later rugby challenge games had, or obviously offside or high tackles being increased which is what I can see you’re working on. Scrums also result in penalties a lot more in reality, this could again be based on timing and how hard you choose to push? Scrums in past rugby video games tend to be like a tug of war which is completely unrealistic.

From what I’ve seen it looks really promising, I just think ramping up that element would give it a much more realistic feel! Really excited to play it.
