AFL 26 - Megathread - This is not a support forum

Awesome you got a few games in !!

10 minute wait for a match up, which is similar to what I was dealing with the last couple seasons is just painful

I know the player base isn’t big but it’s big downer for me !

Is anyone else’s premiership challenge extremely glitchy at the moment?

My past two matches have been shocking.

I can’t get a game tonight. Tried about 5 times, for around 10 mins each time.

On a positive note, I’ve gotten lots of housework done while I’ve been waiting!

Good use of the wait time mate haha

Well I was productive in finally knocking off the Ashcroft objective !

I played ya earlier tonight, ya smashed me by about 50. Was it glitching out heaps for you too?

Yeah a little, there was one play the ball got spoiled in the pocket and teleported across field. You were hosting, we spoke about this a few months ago in here . The servers are P2P so few things dictate the performance
The host

  • internet connection (upload speed)
  • If you’re using wifi over ethernet
  • Stability
  • Other people in the house using internet at the same time
  • Geo location (I’m in Melbourne if you’re interstate that can affect the games)

Something to take into consideration

Ethernet connection of course.
500mb download/50 upload.
Based in eastern suburbs Melbourne.
Only one other person lives with me lol

Highly doubt its my internet, with Aussie Broadband. Yeah apparently its peer to peer but it was fine for the past few weeks. I reckon must be cause more players are playing at the moment due to new season.

Also how do you know who’s hosting?

Unfortunately I’m not quite sure if you’re understanding what DA was explaining with regards to peer to peer.

It can ONLY be the quality of the connection between the two players playing at that point in time.

The amount of people playing can’t have any impact if you’re only connected to one player at a time.

By the sounds of it you both have a pretty good set up, Ethernet and Fast Speed, but the unknown really is the stability/quality of service at that particular point in time.

Unfortunately that’s the nature of peer to peer gaming.

I’m guessing the host is identified at the coin toss (home team/away team) and is probably reflected in the way the results get displayed as well? DA or SS might chime in here as I haven’t played online in a long time due to my connection.

Yeah it’s peer to peer, but it’s not really as simple as ā€œjust our two connections.ā€

Even in P2P setups there’s still a bunch that can affect it, whoever’s hosting, the routing path between us, packet loss, or even temporary ISP
congestion.

Plus, even P2P games still use servers in the background for things like matchmaking or helping players connect, and if those servers act up, it can still affect the gameplay.

So the servers and network path can still play a part in why it goes bad sometimes.

I think the host is the Away team… just a guess though, because I’m pretty sure I’ve experienced more lag when I’m the Home team.

For me, my best online games are when I’m the home team :joy:

Haha I didn’t quit our match, I never quit regardless if I’m getting smashed. Managed to get around 50 points so pretty good against a team full of Obsidians.

You were the only one mate ! So full respect to you for being a good sport and finishing the game :call_me_hand:

Is ā€˜lost on forfeit’ essentially the other player quitting? Do you still get the points? I had thought if they quit nothing happens, it’s a dead match.

Also does that mean if you have a drop out you have effectively forfeited the match - how long do you get to reconnect? Tks.

Got the ironing done. Cleaned the dishes.
It’s a very productive Sunday.

Just others leaving the game, it’s just a pain to play a couple minutes. Yeah you get points for winning but it’s just a waste of a contract on the players and loss of maximum xp and FP.

Just annoying especially with the wait times per game as you can see from @SaintSkeeta above

Some conversations need to be had, it’s been a underlying issue since AFL23

Even if they gave you double points towards your ladder progression and had the quitting deduction at -100 I’d be happy with that, the player is rewarded with points for the equivalent of 2 games and a players gets whacked with the equivalent of 3 matches.

I’m sure that would stop a lot of it, that’s my suggestion anyway. Very easy to implement

Yeah it’s tough because there’s also random disconnections too… so wouldn’t want to excessively punish legit attempts at playing.

EDIT:
Like this. overtime, all that work, some lag and bad decisions by me to allow him a bit of a break, I start to come back…and it disconnects. Even if I played out a loss I would’ve taken it.

I like the ideas thrown up before, like the pause menu to allow some reconnection time… and game completion streak bonuses, so if your area’s internet drops out, you just lose your bonus but not punished by going backwards.

Plus, if they quit in the menus, then surely that’s detectable, so it IS punishable for that illegitimate case.
It’s turning off the console or actually pulling the plug which would be harder to detect.

BTW my next attempt also didn’t go well. My house is now spotless though!

With pulling the plug you are threatened that you can lose your data for PS5 so theres the risk of that actually happening
