Suggestions for a Alternative Control Scheme - for a Fully Manual experience

Why It Works:

  • Without twin joystick control, aiming is tied to movement (Left Stick only)
  • This means to kick in a new direction, you must first change your running direction
  • In a scenario of running away from a defender but wanting to kick past/over them, you’d have to:
    • Turn towards them (bad)
    • Or stop (risk getting caught)

With Twin Joysticks:

  • Left Stick = continue running in one direction
  • Right Stick = independently aim the kick in another direction (But also limit the amount of adjustment for example for a right footer to lets say 45 degrees to the right and 90 degrees to the left)
  • This lets you:
    • Maintain evasive movement
    • Deliver a smart disposal past the defender
    • Avoid tackles without sacrificing attacking intent

one final thought the more you adjust with the right joystick the less power your kick or handball has - The power (how long you hold l1 or l2 for) is unaffected if you just aim using the left joystick and thus going with the running direction - the more adjustment you make with the right joystick the less power your kick has - this way you cant exploit the 360 degree nature of the aim you can do with the right joystick.

Biggest advantage is that both your thumbs and index fingers are touching the key buttons.

This also makes the user uses a grip where your thumbs, index and middle fingers are always on the buttons or joystick, which offers several advantages in fast-paced, competitive games, including maintaining continuous joystick control and quick access to bumpers and triggers.
This grip allows for faster reaction times. Your thumbs, index and middle fingers never have to not be in position.

One benefit I can think of is being able to be faster in raising your arm or fend off, right after receiving the pill. generally players have their right thumb where the buttons are (X, O, Square, Triangle)

If your thumb is always engaging the joystick, you can be quicker in triggering those actions (Push up/forward on the right joystick and at the same time with your index and middle fingers free and ready to engage a kick or handball. (if your arms are free cause you were quick enough to do so)

in a 50 50 contest if your oppenent ends up getting the ball - its still the same movement with your right thumb of pushing up/forward but this time to the triangle tackle button.

Cricket 24 uses the same thumb and finger positions with batting in the ‘Pro’ mode

for you sims racers out there its like playing with a wheel and pedals - hands are always on the wheel - shifter paddles are always in reach of the fingers. right foot is always on the accelerator and left foot is always on the brake. No need to adjust anything.

QUICK, ERGONOMICAL AND ACCURATE

could also just introduce a option to remap buttons…and I would put kicking and handballing into L1 and L2

I’d like to see what a single ‘disposal’ button (X) would be like… short press is handball, longer press is kick.
Then Square could be the lofted variations of those too… opening up more possibilities for the shoulder buttons.

interesting, still would prefer the main disposal buttons on the shoulders (left) and modifiers or the right shoulder buttons - feel like that opens up better player control and your fingers and thumbs dont have to reposition for attacking and being off the ball.

and coming from someone who really enjoys the pro control of cricket 24 and previous versions, just feels right with your two thumbs always on the joysticks 99% of the time and shoulders as modifiers in Cricket.

another way to look at it is like playing a racing sim with a wheel and pedals. hands are always on the wheel, left foot always on top of the brakes and right is always on the accelerator.

just downloaded Footy mayhem on IOS and they have a single disposal button…its interesting
