Victorian Country Leagues Project – AFL 26 Academy Edition
This is grassroots footy, rebuilt and reimagined.
The Victorian Country Leagues Project in AFL 26 Academy brings together 20 of Victoria’s most iconic regional competitions. Each league is crafted to reflect its real-life counterpart, filled with real players—both current and retired— who rose through these local systems. From the fertile talent pool of the Goulburn Valley to the windswept grounds of the Gippsland coast, this project is a digital tribute to the leagues that shaped champions and bred lifelong rivalries.
Here, community pride meets footy tradition. Whether you’re rebuilding history or creating new dynasties, this is where Victorian football lives on.
Individual League Descriptions
1. Geelong Football League (GFL)
One of the strongest regional leagues in the country, the GFL is a breeding ground for AFL talent. Hard-hitting, high-skill footy dominates in this proud coastal powerhouse.
2. Goulburn Valley Football League (GVFL)
Based around Shepparton and surrounding towns, the GVFL is known for producing elite midfielders and fierce rivalries. It’s country footy with a metro-level standard.
3. Ballarat Football League (BFL)
Steeped in history, the BFL delivers tough, old-school footy in icy conditions. Expect contested footy and legendary club loyalty.
4. Ovens & Murray Football League (O&MFL)
Border towns unite in this ultra-competitive league. Fast, skillful, and physical, the O&MFL has long been a key AFL recruiting ground.
5. Hampden Football League
Western Victoria’s finest. This league thrives on coastal grit and country pride, producing hard-bodied footballers and legendary local derbies.
6. Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL)
Spanning bayside suburbs to the Mornington Peninsula, the MPNFL blends beachside flair with hard-edged rivalries.
7. Murray Football League
A cross-border comp with a deep connection to local communities. Strong clubs, family ties, and local legends define this classic league.
8. Wimmera Football League
Sprawling across the western plains, the Wimmera league is built on physicality, resilience, and long-time rivalries among wheatbelt towns.
9. Sunraysia Football League
Centred around Mildura, this league brings heat—literally and figuratively. Talented Indigenous players and high-scoring games define Sunraysia footy.
10. West Gippsland Football League
A fast-growing region where tradition meets emerging talent. Expect wet-weather toughness and strong junior pathways.
11. Bellarine Football League
On the coast near Geelong, the BFL is footy with a scenic twist—passionate fans, big hits, and rivalries that split holiday towns.
12. Central Murray Football League
This league spans a mix of Victorian and NSW clubs. It’s rugged, spirited, and a true showcase of river country footy.
13. Outer East Football League
A mix of metro-fringe and mountain towns, this league delivers tough footy across diverse terrains—from leafy suburbs to alpine valleys.
14. Riddell District Football League (RDFL)
A historic league in Melbourne’s northwest corridor. The RDFL thrives on suburban heart and country toughness.
15. Central Highlands Football League
Known for its strong community feel and hard-earned wins. It’s muddy ovals, loyal crowds, and Saturday tradition.
16. North Central Football League
Stretching across northern wheatbelt towns, this league is physical, rural footy at its purest. Every win is earned, every rivalry personal.
17. Colac & District Football League
Set in the Otways, this league is tight-knit and tradition-rich. Expect wet-weather masters and long-standing rivalries.
18. Ovens & King Football League
A feeder to the bigger O&MFL, the O&K is built on passion, perseverance, and proud small-town clubs punching above their weight.
19. Bendigo Football League (BFNL)
Bendigo is a footy hub, and this league reflects that. Strong clubs, elite facilities, and a proud legacy of producing top-tier talent.
20. Gippsland Football League
From Traralgon to Warragul, the GFL is a powerhouse of country footy. Skilled, physical, and full of proud communities.
