Rugby League 26 - Megathread

I posted these ideas on the discord but will paste them here:

Controlled movement added to all players both player and AI is the missing puzzle piece for defense.

Makes a lot of sense cos the AI assisted players just run non stop side to side so having that balance from running to the whole line in controlled movement sets the line like you would see defense do in a real game. Would make defense more realistic.

Then all I’d do is allow left or right slide defense cancel assisted player running so press left Dpad and line immediately runs left or press right and the line runs right and you can cancel into controlled movement at any time to set the line and by pressing up on the Dpad it immediately selects nearest player to ball carrier and your defensive line compresses to about 7 or 8 on the def OVR influence slider and you can cancel into controlled movement at any point.

Bare basics you should be able to cancel into slide defense and compressed defense at any point.

Hi there, defector from the Rugby 25 forum here. I own all of the RLL games, 1-4, but have been holding off paying full whack for RL 26 in the hope that there might be a sale (Rugby 25 has regularly been discounted since just a few months after release). As this doesn’t seem to be happening, I wanted to ask if you guys think it’s worth buying at this stage, or should I plod on with RLL 4? Also, is 9s still in the game? I used to love that mode! I’d appreciate any advice, cheers!

Rugby League 26 still needs a lot of work. While it has it’s good moments there’s too many issues that can make it a frustrating experience. RLL4 is arguably a lot better still. I’d wait for a sale. There’s also no 9’s.

Hey, cheers for that mate, much appreciated!

Yes, it certainly does look like it plays a better game of League than Rugby 25 does Union. But having spent 60 big ones on the latter only to see it reduced a month or so later, I’m wary of doing the same again. I just know that if I shell out on RL26, they’ll drop the price a few days later.

I still enjoy playing this game but still a lot of improvements to be made

Need the fix when you go up for a contest for the ball and knock it behind, it’s given as a knock on against you

Might be nice too, one day, if we can maybe have control of the players when we select them in defence. By that, I mean in the example of when your opposition put a kick downfield right near the sideline. You can select your fullback, but have zero control over him/her until they get the ball … and oftentimes you don’t want them getting the ball in that moment. I would love to take control of my fullback in that moment and just have him/her leave the ball alone.

In the old games you could press down on the right analog to not go after the ball close to the sideline, have not tried it yet in this game. But would be good if we can tackle, select the next defender close by and then tackle with 2nd and 3rd closest defender, particularly to help stop those boring try line one on one struggle tries,(while defenders stand and watch) annoying when it happens to me and I hate when I am able to do it to the AI. Worst part of the game, haven said that it does seem like it has been reduced some, and still enjoying the game:) Look forward to improvements on try line defense in particular.

so disappointed not to see any gameplay updates

No new kits, no new faces etc. Kinda feels like they’ve started to wind down with this game and focus on other projects.

the kits and faces don’t worry me so much
I like the overall graphics of the game, looks good on my tv but it’s the gameplay. there’s so much wrong with it. the physics are all over the shop. the “set plays” and off the ball movement is crazy..ive played coached and reffed league all my life and ive never ever seen any of those plays in my life..how come when you play against the AI they never run any of the plays? are they essentially just lines on the ground for them to run all willy nilly?
the whole “probability” around the difficulty sliders is a major as the input controls and timing means nothing as everything is decided on probabilities not a skilled fend or well timed bump etc..the goose step is automatic and so is the break tackle no buttons needed..just feels like im never in control

Can Big Ant please add loan signing to the game. It would make it so much better.

Once the sliders were added, I wonder if this was the end of gameplay enhancements. Because any new gameplay feature would effect the sliders. My largest gripe is not being able to engage a 2nd or 3rd defender in a tackle when the one on one struggle tackle animation starts, this animation particularly on the try line is my least favorite part of the game’. I don’t even like scoring these type of trys, the 2nd and 3rd defender should get involved more, for the USER and for the AI. Hopefully at some point this will be fixed. Having said that, it does seem like it has been reduced some, and by increasing the chance of a tackle not going to ground (in the sliders) it seems like it helps to prevent some of these lame 1 on 1 struggle tries. The game is fun to play at times, but still needs some improvements.

Game seemed to improve in some areas, while really taking a step back in other areas. You can not tap the ball back on a kick , it will be called a knock on. This used to work? Does anyone know, how the mechanics of the up and unders work. How do you read the meters, or is it complete luck?

I did exactly that and don’t see much of a change. What i have found from any starting point if i adjust anything to do with defence the controlled team never miss a tackle. I’ve literally given up on the whole slider fiasco. Also given up on any custom game settings ever working outside of a play now game and given up on being able to play a custom comp with more than 16 teams, or creating a non flat Henson Park in the useless feild editor.

Played a 60 minute RLL 3 game where i was down 32 12 at halftime and managed to score on the last play to win 44 to 42.

Played a 60 minute game on RLL4 that end with a loss of 12 to 10.

Both games had a better feel to them than this game has and were more fun to play.

The only thing this new game has going for it is it has better graphics unfortunately. It all started out positive but now it has become worse than the predecessors.

Hopefully they will one day make all editors and sliders actually work fix up the amatuer updates to make game play actually realistic.

I understand your frustration. I do constantly play around with the sliders for what its worth. Only on Play Now.

Ive found no answer for Goal Line defence, you see more 2 / 3 man tackles in general play, but on the goal line they are almost non existent.

Ill keep an eye on missed tackles from now on.

Currently all I have been trying to do is make the game, enjoyable but realistic, so trying to get a good balance of Big Hits, Strips and Ruck Infringements - but the sliders seem to be connected, for example, my current Big Hit Ratio = 25% and the Spill Chance = 1%, but the AI and myself still easily force a knock on using a Big Hit, you would expect the 1% Spill Chance would limit the knock on.

EDIT - still don’t understand why you have to wait for a new reply before you can post again here.

I narrowed down the custom difficulties and Missed Tackles, if you have your Evade settings ALL on or below 45% there will be no missed tackles. It has to be all of them, and it seems that all have to be on or below 45%.

This is tested using the Default Pro setting for all difficulties then only changing the four sliders to 45%

It feels like if you adjust anything the AI’s starts to have big hits every other tackle, weird, and there should be a slider to increase the probability of more defenders joining in on the tackle particularly on the try line were those slow motion one on one struggle tries happen. I hate scoring these type of tries and hate them being scored on me. Hate to see the defenders just standing around be it my defenders or the AI, at the very least have some of the 1 on 1 struggles tackles on the try line be held up or knock the ball loose or have the offensive player drop the ball, at least there would be some excitement to this type of try, this would bundle well with the video ref, it seemed in old games we had this feature. In old soccer games you could help bring in a second defender to help on the tackle by pressing a particular button, this could work well because it would be risk vs reward, by bringing in a second defender you can help with the tackle but at the same time risk leaving another player open for a pass, could work great in a Rugby league game.

the whole problem is the probability itself
it should be based on what input you put in, plus timing and the stats of the player factor in after that. with “probability” the decisions are made for you then an animation just plays out. perfect example is the “dummy”. (which is actually a side step. the commentator even says it)
I don’t understand how they don’t have an add/remove player mechanic, as Rugby 25 has that mechanic that would work perfect. in that game only 3 ppl enter a ruck anyway so its same/same. also in R25 the passes are faster and open play seems to be slightly better. there’s a few things they could merge to make both games better
in R26 I struggle with the constant 1on1 tackles around the chest that takes the attackers back 5 mtrs. no matter what angle! in all my years ive never seen that tackle happen anywhere, ever..??!! where does this come from. same with the “set plays”..who actually came up with this? I would love just one game where the attackers just stand still and run straight..all the off the ball movement is punishing
