Rugby 25 Megathread

I haven’t posted for a while had a few other things going on in life, but overall I found the last patch to be an improvement. Yes it was an improvement in areas which should already have been good in relation to player speeds and traveling into rucks in better priority and including more backs, but it was good to see a patch that is generally a small step forward.

There are so many more things that need fixed and many others that need implemented into this game, but here are three that I think might be good for some patch coming up soon.

A small annoyance is when a stray pass carries on at almost full speed to the side line. I’d like to see them lose most of their speed pretty rapidly and have them stop on the field so they can be collected. It looks ridiculous and unreal and needed fixed months ago.

Dive tackles, these are largely pointless. The player barely travels at all or launches towards the attacking player. When chasing it just means your player is going to fall to the ground right behind the player they are trying to chase down and dive tackle. I know that there were stupid Superman like tackles with huge dives in some previous rugby games, but this is virtually the opposite. When players dive in real life, generally do get a little more distance towards the player theyre intending to tackle. Also it seems to me that dive tackles are weaker than standard tackles and don’t provide that last minute save that they should.

For my third one I am going to come back to kicking distance. I know it has been marginally improved and that’s good but it’s still isn’t quite worth kicking when inside your 22. There are many times you can’t get near halfway, and it’s often caught infield and the counterattack brings it right back to within five meters of where you kicked it pretty quickly anyway. The changes made to kicking were one of the first I’ve seen patched that didn’t cause any problems and it would be great if they could be tweaked for a little longer distance yet.

Who knows what we’ll see with the overnight patch, but besides gameplay I know there are a lot of users who are sick and tired of waiting for some more flexibility and content. From the way custom competitions are set up which is significantly inferior to other big ant offerings. To the fact that you can barely edit any players or their skills in the game. Also, there’s no news whatsoever on gameplay sliders are they coming or not?

On another note I don’t know whether or not this was done deliberately but it seems like now when you go to take a Grubber kick, that the opposition doesn’t just tackle you before you can run through to get the ball. I have seen some very entertaining kick and chases with my players against the AI and other humans I’ve played. So thanks for that.

Looking forward to what I hope is a somewhat more substantial update then previous weeks.

Any news about today’s patch?

Flows a lot better on AI vs AI now, maybe its a placebo effect though. AI attacks dont break down so easily anymore.

Update 3305 on Steam.

Ok….

But what about what actually matters Player vs AI?

I didn’t buy a game to watch AI v AI when I can watch real life rugby on the TV and YouTube

There does seem to be an unusual amount of posts about AI versus AI. I don’t pretend to understand the fascination of watching an AI side play another AI side. You have no control over it, it doesn’t really have any connection to the real life teams or results. You aren’t actually playing anything despite Rugby 25 actually being a game.

There could be something about it that I’m missing in understanding it but each to their own I suppose.

I play a fair bit of local multiplayer with friends and have competitions with them, which is actually playing the game, but it’s obviously not as common anymore as human versus AI gameplay.

Completely agree, I too would not enjoy watching AI vs AI, and like it was mentioned in the previous post by Rugbywolf, why not just watch it on tv?

But if I may, I think some people use this to measure where the game is in terms of AI intelligence in attack and defence. If you can get a realistic score in AI vs AI, I guess the game is just about where you want it to be.

But, for me, if I can win or lose a match vs the AI with realistic scores consistently, I would say that I’m happy with where the game is.

There is no human element in AI vs AI, a person can think on the spot whether they want to break the line or kick the ball into space, at the end of the day, no matter how good your AI is, it’s still programmed.

I may be blabbering on about nonsense, but that’s just my thoughts.

Bang on mate.

We can only see how good the AI is when it has to react to us as the player.

AI vs AI in a sports sim demonstrates very little as to the quality of the AI.

AI needs to pushed into quick decisions, when it plays AI it is playing against its own pre-determined code base.

For example we as players will do and can do far more dynamic running lines after breaking the defensive line and from watching the AI run at more tight angles across the pitch to get to the corner which the AI frankly doesn’t and hasn’t to date.

The AI is frankly doing too much straight line runs with ball carriers and almost craving contact rather than keeping the ball alive or running angles to pose us as the player questions.

Defenetly better, now.
Now, on the jersey, they seems proper logos.
Hopefully next step is adding:
Multiple pattern on the jersey.
More than 8 logo per kits.

Current AI logic after update on attack: Fend one- take hit -offload.
Pass- Pass- inside pass
Side step-take hit
360 take hit
Still nt drawing defenders or spotting space…
And may I add, excessive FENDING IS BACK!!!

Can we just please be able to add the real players to custom teams. I like many people are trying to make the lions and just want to use the real players.

I’m on PlayStation, so haven’t had today’s update yet. This morning, I decided to have a couple of games on PS4 instead of my usual PS5, and the game seemed to play much better than the new gen version! Stability, AI, even quick lineouts worked properly! Far and away my best experience to date with this game, but I don’t get why the two versions feel so different. Looking forward to today’s patch, but also hoping it doesn’t set the PS4 version back a few builds!

So it is still amateur rugby league simulator?

This.

Some of us like a bit of clever organic unscripted AI (this game certainly has never been clever so far…), and watching AI vs AI I personally do on other sports games as well, I judge a game on its AI these days and not what we as the player is able to do.

That’s me personally of course, and I would never watch Rugby on TV except rarely, its not my sport at all, but I love well coded Sports games regardless of whether its a sport I am normally into.

Isn’t strange with all the AI progress in other aspects of life, that the AI for video games seems to not advanced at the same level? Weird that games from 10 years past have more challenging AI with more varied attacks and random attacks. Now, in saying this if we go back about 30 years, yes, many times games did have patterns that you could learn the patterns. If we can get the AI opponent to play with the intelligence of RLL4 then we could have a good Rugby 25 AI, not going to pretend I know anything about coding, but you would think there would be some coding and scripts that would translate over from RLL4 or Rll3 into Rugby 25.
But I do remember although those games did have many patches the AI was challenging from initial release, that is the concern in this case.

This is a good point indeed, and something I wont see if im always doing AI vs AI, spot on in that the AI responding or needing to respond to us playing the game is what it should be about, as its only competing against its own logic for AI vs AI.

I think I need to start playing the games a bit more!!

I think there’s more chance in any one of us winning the lottery than getting the development team to fix the player positioning as in the backs being too deep.
I’ve posted in-depth GIFs on what’s wrong with this as have others but they seem to fall on deaf ears from the development team or they just don’t know how to fix it.
Shame really.

Got the patch on PS5, started a quick match (France v Australia, hard) . 9 minutes in, three forwards with empty arrows stand impassively for close to ten seconds as I frantically hammer the circle button to get them to join the ruck, ref shouts “use it!”, then gives a scrum against me. The hopes of an entire week shattered inside a couple of minutes. Why do I even bother?

Oh, and the underpowered conversions appear to be back (or maybe they never went away?)
