Had a look at the conversion kicking today, just to wrap my head around what is actually happening. Why some games im going 10/10 and some im going 0/10.
Tested a lot of power and angles and understood it a bit more, so thought I would pass on some findings.
So in the tutorial zone, it feels like theres no wind, so the kick is just the kick itself. The power bar and the movement of the R analog stick is treated like the players leg.
So the power bar only builds up as you near the ball and you only have until the boot touches the ball to build up power.
Its not the same movement on the stick as it has been since the swap from the Y button. The biggest difference is final resting position of the R analog stick on the controller effects the resulting kick more than the trjectory of the back to front stick swing.
IF you think about it as the very top center of the stick placment is the ball, the final position of the stick is where your players boot hits the ball. So if you are using a right footed kicker. And you end up slightly left of center with the stick. You are effectively stricking the ball with the outside of your boot, and the ball goes right even though you went left.
And the exact opposite, if you end the stick right of center, its like you hit the ball with the inside of your boot and so it flies left.
Once you get to grips with what it wants from you, you can actually put the final white target line anywhere and miss on purpose in the correct direction and still score, such as the gif below.

Filling the power bar up more obviously does add more power to the kick, but feel like it adds some sort of additional chance to the kick wildly missing. Ive noticed a better ratio of successful kicks, by pushing the stick forwards slower that the âimmidiate flickâ the tutorial suggests. Because the end resting place of the stick is more important than the trajectory or speed of the movement.
There are other outliers. In a match, there is also Wind arrows on the ground, which seems to play a part, theres still no way in the game to know how much wind speed there is, only direction of the arrows. And it feels like rather than the wind carrying the ball slowly mid air, its more like the wind impacts the ball the millisecond it leaves the kicking tee, and heads in that direction.
Ive also noticed something a lot more âoffâ when you play with Italy. I cant work out if maybe because Garbisi is left footed, something isnt registering correctly, maybe I just happen to have really bad luck or skill issue on my end with him. But for some reason I have got kicks from directly infront of the posts, being shanked 45 degrees in a direction and missing the posts completely. And can end a game 0/10 successful kicks. But in the same match, swap to the opposition France team and score 100% with Ramos from way out on the touchline.
Kicking ability isnt bad for Garbisi, hes rated 90. So i can only think the left footed thing is adding some additional element ending in odder outcomes.
Even in the training mode, I have had 1 or 2 just zoom off on a 45 degree angle, and cant think what was different between that 1, and the 10 successful kicks either side of it.
Also think it would be good in the tutorial bit, to have a âfree placementâ of the ball, anywhere on the field, so people can test harder kicks, rather than just always infront of the posts.
Sorry if anyone has already mentioned any of this. Theres been like 180 posts on this thread since I last checked, so might be some cross over.
