Rugby 25 Megathread

AI v AI match : Sale Sharks 0-3 Harlequins

Game set on 20 minute halves, medium difficulty and side view camera.

Not the score I was expecting after the last couple of games I’ve played. I have thought since the patch on Thursday and Fridays smaller patch that the AI generally have gotten better. But there are a few glaring issues I’m still seeing or not seeing as the case may be.

Overall I’ve noticed there are not many if any knock ons in the game and therefore very few knock on penalties awarded. Infact there are very few penalties at all during games.

High tackle penalties, when they happen which isn’t much, the opposing team are awarded the scrum but the offending player doesn’t receive a yellow/red card for it. Colour of card would be depending upon severity of tackle, no arms, shoulder, head, intent etc. all those require consideration as to severity of punishment for the offending player. But like I say there’s nothing awarded, only the scrum for the other team.

Like someone else has mentioned I’m noticing every box kick is being caught. There are no handling errors I’ve seen. No dropping of the ball be it forwards or backwards. Especially in rain affected matches. You would think in those conditions you would see more handling errors of any kind anyway because of wet conditions. But everything seems to be caught/handled perfectly every time.

When a kick for territory is performed the opposing side in the 22 don’t call for the mark at all. I know there are different situations whereby a mark can be called but I’ve never seen this rule implemented in game yet.

When the clock is in the red (beyond 80 minutes) a team should never be box kicking when they are 7 or fewer points behind there opponents. This just results in the opposing team either kicking or running the ball into touch thereby ending the game. I’m seeing this happen a lot during matches.

When a team are attempting to take a quick line out it results in a complete mess. The players can sometimes be literally faffing about for a short while which for some reason then ends up in an offside penalty to the opposing team. Something else which needs looking at.

Try animations need to be looked at. I’ve had an instance now where a player has ran under the posts and by the time he has dived to make the grounding he’s gone over the dead ball line resulting in a goal line drop out to the other team. I know there are occasions where players need to or want to dive to get the try but surely you could implement a simple placement of the ball down for the try without the need for dives too?

Another bug I’m seeing is when a player goes to offload the ball, rather than the ball being it passed it takes off into orbit for some reason and finally comes down seconds later somewhere else and sometimes the opposing team will catch it. I’m sure this is a bug though.

Look the game is on the right track no doubt about that and I’m enjoying it more now than at launch. I realise rugby Union could be a harder game to simulate because of various laws etc. But hopefully a few of these issues will get ironed out.

Sorry for the rambling long post. Good patches this week. Keep up the good work and thank you very much for addressing issues. Most appreciated Big Ant :ant:. Thank you :+1:

Edit: I’ve just remembered another issue. I had an instance whereby a team committed an offside just outside the 22 and right in front of the posts. The AI went for a scrum?? Surely you would choose a kick at goal for 3 points or kick to touch with the hope of winning a line out and maybe go for a driving maul towards the try line. That’s what I’d pick.

I know there are situations whereby you may choose a scrum but it’s getting to the point now in my games where the AI are constantly choosing a scrum, and when I’m playing my games entirely AI v AI that becomes a lot of scrum penalties when other options are available.

Hopefully folk agree with me and this is something that can be sorted in a future patch perhaps? :+1:

That’s interesting, maybe easy is harder than hardest difficulty still

I switched to easy for a while because it seemed harder but they said they have tuned the difficulty … I assumed that meant hardest would now be … well hardest. Maybe not.

I don’t do anything special tbh just RS backwards … does not really seem to matter how early or late I press it, just always auto works and then hit the offload after it. I can link like 5 or 6+ offloads together in a phase pretty regularly.

I don’t use any tricks to win, I just pass the ball, draw and off load. I pass outside, back inside sometimes. I very rarely run from 9. I don’t do many 50/22’s etc. For me the game just seems far too easy, the AI simply can’t score and if I score early 30’s to nil that is a low scorer. If some find it a challenge that is great, for me would be ideal if they could just add another difficulty or two on top in that case. Just no reason to play when you know they will never score and you’ll never lose.

I only use B tackle as well and AI do break more tackles but they still get driven back more often than go forward. They are too predictable and you can tell by how they line their formation up as to who they are going to pass the ball to. They need to nerf the fend for user and AI tbh. But in saying that, the bump would need to be included beforehand. I haven’t done a successful bump in months.

Maybe I will give the game a shot on easy and see if it is any different. I will try take note to see if I always time fend in any way too. Let you know if I have some trick I didn’t know I was doing

Update: Played 5 minute halves vs NZ at Eden Park and the difficulty is not much different tbf.

Also the fend I did nothing special. Whether I push back once on the RS or just spam it backwards repeatedly when running at the defender the result is the same it seems.

@ JNT

Quick question for you. Would it be possible to relay back to your team the need for the AI to make their own substitutions?

I can pause my game and then select either side and select the subs for them. However, if I forget for any reason the AI currently won’t make any substitutions.

Whoever deals with the AI if this could be implemented it would make things a lot better.

Many thanks :+1:

Apologies if this has been mentioned but one obvious way the AI can improve is simply being able to pass to a support runner to finish off breaks.

They pass better now which is obvious but once they have done their set 1-3 passes then it stops.

Small annoying detail right now for me is how the Hurricanes are always just “Canes”. I know it’s insignificant, but it’s an easy fix.

Woa your defeating the All Blacks with Zimbabwe, that is amazing, it could be that you are just really good player at the game because I defo not finding the game that easier. Perhaps Hardest could be made tougher but I think anything below normal needs to be as it is.

I was struggling on Easiest but I have now moved to Easy. I think Easy is where I will end up difficulty related. I am going to conduct a test lowering payer fend and hope that stops fend offs as often from CPU, perhaps it is a ratings tweak I need on my players I need to study more.

I also appreciate Big Ant for fixing the screenshot issue in Academy, thanks for fix on that guys appreciated.

A question just throwing out is anyone planning to make classic or retro teams and kits for Rugby 25? Really looking a few classic teams I have a classic All Blacks downloaded at moment.

Last upgrade definetely improved AI, great job!
But please please please, fix the opponent’s bumbs off, it’s really annoying that they alwas always beat the first defender

Thank you Team!

If you time the tackle well and quickly rush up with first defender the Ai don’t always fend off the first tackle. I disagree. I think the fend offs are good.

Even when they get injured I have found the ai doesn’t sub them of which is annoying because if they get the ball or make a tackle its a scrum and stops play. Also if a player is injured could they please lie on the ground because from what I remember, I don’t think a player with a broken leg would still be running around.

Hi Team,

Further patch feedback

Female Scrums - Audio.

The current audio is of male vocal sounds when pushing and contesting the scrum. It would be good in the future if you can please record female audio.

Thanks

I noticed this too Reds1121

I think my only worry is will having multiple injuries cause a game freeze or glitch

I do like the injury cutscene that appears I love that addition. I agree some might say do injuries mean anything if they can stay on the pitch it’s a fair point

If subs are possible then I’d say let the cpu make a change but I have a feeling it would maybe cause a glitch and that’s why they haven’t added it in, they want it to be working before they go there

In my test game I was kinda saying on commentary “oh look at that the other teams coach is risking keeping him on hurt”

Hey BigAnt, will consoles ever get a graphical update? Pc currently looks alot better, specifically the grass, which changes it so much, at the moment, at least on xbox, the grass looks like carpet, would be nice to see the 3d grass in the game.
Additional, will mud and dirt ever appear on players kits? Maybe a small amount in dryer games but if it is wet most players kits are gonna be brown, would like to see that implemented on each player due to how many tackles they are making and being involved in.

up and under kicks need to be tweaked. I feel like this would add another great element to the game and would be so easy for Big Ant to fix (i would think).

Agree on the injuries point. Not having the AI make subs impacts the immersion. And please can we have cut scene for making the subs? Can’t believe it’s not in there but just not active at the moment.
Also it’s been mentioned before, option to skip the line out prep featuring the linesmen commanding their authority on the game would be helpful, same with the scrum set up.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks

Can we also look at try animations?
We don’t have a normal put down try without diving.
You don’t always want to dive.
Maybe implement it where a certain button triggeres a put down try and another triggers dive tries

Yeah I can understand that on hardest difficulties, but on easy and medium should be at least more accessible

Do you know at all if you guys are planning to add more licensed content into the game? I noticed in career mode when you look at the tournament’s in there you can play the European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup. I was wondering whether they will become available outside the career mode at some point, and if not fully licensed maybe we can add our own custom logos to the tournaments?

Whilst on the subject of tournaments maybe the World Cup for men and women, and the Rugby Championship could be featured outside of career mode also?

I know you guys are working on other more important stuff atm but I thought I’d ask the question. Many thanks.

It’s a great question to ask and I second and agree with the question ATM Gamer

I’d like to see ability to choose the venue for the final and assign a custom trophy like you could in cricket 24 for custom competition and then see the custom trophy cutscene when you when or even lose the final game

Rugby World Cup format would be great to add in yes. With these small tweaks we could have an epic custom competition mode

I appreciate the previous change they made also to increase the amount of teams in custom competition I respect Big Ant for that we just need a few small additions

Perhaps the ability to set a host team for tournament also

Also to be able to create your own Tour with international teams, like Springboks/New zealand tour to Ireland or so, but also being able to Add licensed players to other Teams @JNT_BA @MattW

Sorry to say on the last update 3001 on xbox-s the rucks turnovers seem to be happening at wrong times. I had several times when on defense I three defensive players had arrive to the ruck before the offensive support, and did not get a steal. It seemed like the update before was working more accuaretly with more variety in the way the rucks were being turned over. It seem on the new update the 2-3 player bind push over is not available anymore. The only way to turn over the ruck is bind and then x steal with one player sometimes causeing a passive steal , but most of the time doing the bowling ball barge 1 vs 1-2 players, the 1 vs 3 seems to be gone which is good , but I noticed much less variety in the way the rucks could play out, did not feel right.

Ruck should work like this with this system on defense
If you isolate the offensive player, you should be able to tackle, stand, and passive steal, or tackle, bind supporting player, passive steal.
On offense you should have the choice to try to hold on until support arrives, with the chance of being called for not releasing.
If you tackle and a ruck forms before a steal, you should be able to bind, and use Y to counter ruck push over for trailing defensive support, or out bind the offensive team, for a 1 vs 1 clear out, 2 vs 1 , clear out, or 2 vs 2 clear out depending on who has joined the ruck or 3 vs 2 clear out or 3 vs 3 clear out.
If you try to x(steal) instead of Y pushover/clear-out then you could get away with a hand in ruck passive possession or get called for a hand in the ruck.
This is the best way to put this ruck system together and when each type of animation should trigger. The system is complete, they just have to put it together better. The three button system for rucking can work and the animation for them are there. They just have to make it work better.
I should not have three defensive rucking players arrive to a tackled player without support, and not get the steal or have the offensive player called for holding on. This happen like 4 times in the game. I had 3 at the ruck on defense and the offense had 0.

The fends should be a timed thing, to easy to do. Just run at an angle and hold the right analog down and you will get the fend 90% , you can use a pattern that the AI can not stop. Take the ball run at an angle, fend, pass or offload , and repeat, all the way down to the try line.

The AI is still very weak in attack. Two even teams on hardest difficulty, in 10 minute games win by 3-4 tries. While constantly pushing the AI back to there try line/.

No point in using any other offensive skill move , the fend is to easy,

The game got stuck like 3 times with not being able to tackle the AI, I had to turn into the AI and take control, because the game would not allow me to tackle the AI. The AI would just run backwards, when I went to the control screen, and took control, then I could stop it and then switch back.

I see a good Rugby game in there, but we got a long, long, long way to go.
