AFL 23 - Megathread

Apologies if this has already been asked and answered but was the plan always to release patch updates this year, instead of a new AFL24 game?

And do you know what the plans are moving forward for future versions of the game? eg can fans expect an AFL25 next year from BA?

Roadmap-wiseā€¦ are we just expecting the Pro Team update in a week or so, and then the AFLW update, and thatā€™s it for the game (besides any required breakfixes?), or is there still a plan to release more feature updates in future? Noticed the ā€œat this timeā€ so just enquiring

Surely not. I expect to be drip fed updates for at least next 50 years
Or at least until there are more stadium and guernsey editing options.

this is so depressing to see. Going the EA route.

Well Ross the Boss did say he saw EA as Big Antā€™s main competition. Shame on us for thinking that meant AAA sports game developer rather than purveyors of microtransaction riddled virtual casinos (one year after release without the existing modes being fixed first).

You previously complained about missing game modesā€¦ and now that one of those, Pro Team, is likely comingā€¦ youā€™re saying you donā€™t want it yet?

For me, this is the final thing in the original listā€¦ and Iā€™m looking forward to it landing.

For missing game modesā€¦
Training/Tutorials - there is a Guide, plus plenty of explanations of how to play the game (if anyone hasnā€™t figured out how to play it by nowā€¦ Iā€™m also doing YouTube explainer videos if you need)ā€¦ also thereā€™s Custom Difficulties where people can drop everything down in order to figure out specific areas if they want to figure outā€¦ This is probably a low/non priority now anywayā€¦

For existing game modes ā€˜being fixed firstā€™ā€¦
I personally donā€™t mind the lack on in-game injuriesā€¦ as mentioned, you can simulate them if you really wantā€¦just sub out a player. No, itā€™s not a final solutionā€¦ but Iā€™d prefer to just do that and have purple Grand Final streamers, rather than to miss out on Pro Team for another couple of months.

And the thing we all need to remember is, our individual priorities may not match the most popular priorities of other gamers.
If I saw 100 more people complain about coloured streamers, then fine, my want for ProTeam can take a back seatā€¦ but for nowā€¦ Twitter/Facebook/Forums all have people screaming for ProTeam to arriveā€¦and no doubt that weighs into Big Antā€™s prioritization.

I want everything that was promised.

I also have no doubt whatsoever that Pro Team is Big Antā€™s priority. Less than zero doubt.

Every other AFL game/sport game in history would disagree about this injury comment. Not much to ask at all. Quite a baisic thing for a sport game really. A good sport game simulation should have a season mode that reflects experiencing the real thing. The expectations of what that reflection looks like will change overtime. But fundamental things that are included in AFL1998 should be in 2024. Thatā€™s what I prioritise in an AFL video game. Just like anything in life, success means getting the basics right first.

With regards to proteam, you do realise itā€™s probably going to come out riddled with errors and lacking polish like every other part of a game bigant releases?

As I said letā€™s get the basics right first.

100% this. No one is asking for the world - pretty sure the majority of the stuff thatā€™s still missing was in the Evo games.

More physicality, better stats, better UI, more comprehensive management mode, better replays & game highlights, injuries, etcā€¦ as if weā€™re still so far off what previous versions offered a year after release!

Iā€™m happy to be patient if those improvements are coming at some point, but itā€™s so disheartening to hear that once again BA are prioritising $$$ (Pro Team) over meaningful improvements to the actual game itself.

Iā€™d like the ongoing updates too, but Pro Team has been slated for May 28ā€¦ and when we get to that date, imagine what the reaction would be like if we instead just got injuries in Season/Management Mode.
I know people who bought the game mainly for Pro Team, and have waited this longā€¦

Sure, both would be nice, and itā€™s not to say that injuries will never come (I hope they will too)ā€¦ itā€™s just not the priority for a lot of gamers, and therefore, not a priority for this next update.

Whatā€™s with the draft being so bad?

Proteam is not the priority for a lot of gamers as well. Proteam is not the saving grace of AFL23. In reality it will likely come out broken.

As per the most recent discussion, fixing exisiting game modes isnā€™t Big Antā€™s priority.

Adding microtransactions is.

@JNT_BA is there going to be anything like a trailer or something in lead up to ā€˜Proteamā€™ release??

Yep and apparently achieving both is not possible, even a year later after release.

Iā€™m sure youā€™re correctā€¦ that it isnā€™t a high priority for quite a few gamersā€¦ but purely judging by the outcry on the boards/threads/socials, ProTeam has the higher demandā€¦ so Iā€™d use that to guess that itā€™s what a majority of people want.

Iā€™m looking forward to itā€¦ and while I doubt itā€™ll have all the features of EAFCā€™s (FIFA)'s Ultimate Teamā€¦ I think itā€™ll give the game another longevity angleā€¦ and then hopefully after that the in-game injuries can be looked at.

People complaining about microtransactions (if theyā€™re even part of itā€¦), well, just play it and donā€™t spend your money.
I never once paid for an Ultimate Team pack, because I felt like playing the game to earn them was far better.

My main concern is that a shiny new mode is going to break the game again, and my concern is based on ā€¦ The entire history of this game.

Wanting the existing game to be fixed and sealed off from Big Antā€™s tinkering with new modes isnt too much to ask for I would think. Especially when the entire purpose of the new mode is to monetise the experience of something we already paid $100 for.

And letā€™s be honest, the state of play now and season modes are really the absolute bare minimum we should be expecting from a full-price title in 2024 in the first place

Ugh. This thing is never going to be what we were promised, is it?

I would argue proteam is the most prominent theme on social media not because itā€™s peoples priority but because its absence from the game is the most obvious/universally known thing to complain about. Tom, Dick and Harry might not actually have the game but still know to complain about no proteam.

I highly doubt that people without the game, are complaining about the game they donā€™t have.
